More than ever before, there are a plethora of movies being released and in various ways -- theatrically, direct-to-video, video-on-demand, downloads, etc. Therefore, you want your movie to get noticed. You can have big stars, a flashy ad campaign, or you can push the envelope. With a title like A Good Old Fashioned Orgy, you can most likely consider the envelope pushed. (Although, you're taking a chance with a title that many theaters or retailers wouldn't display.) However, a name like that sets up many expectations which would be difficult for any movie to meet.

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy introduces us to a group of old friends -- Eric (Jason Sudekis), McCrudden (Tyler Labine), Alison (Lake Bell), Sue (Michelle Borth), Adam (Nick Kroll), Laura (Lindsay Sloane), Willow (Angela Sarafyan), and Duquez (Martin Starr) -- who love to throw crazy parties at Eric's father's house in The Hamptons. They have known each other for years, and they love to get crazy. When Eric learns that his dad (Don Johnson) plans to sell the house, the group decides that they must throw one last wild blowout. It's suggested that they have an orgy and everyone reluctantly agrees. But, as close as these friends are, can they be intimate together? Meanwhile, Eric hopes to distract real estate agent Kelly (Lelie Bibb) by taking her out.

As noted above, a title like A Good Old Fashioned Orgy brings certain images to mind. Is the movie as risque as one would expect? Is it as funny as one would hope? The answer to both of those questions is no. The DVD contains the unrated version of the movie -- an R-rated version did play in theaters -- and there is some nudity here, but it's not pervasive and it's nothing which we haven't seen in other movies. I was actually surprised by how relatively -- again, that's relatively -- tame the dialogue is. Yes, there's a lot of talk about sex and scatological references, but there was more graphic language in Sudekis' other wild movie from 2011, Hall Pass. Am I saying that this is a family film? By no means, but those expecting a truly raunchy movie will be disappointed.

You'll also be disappointed in A Good Old Fashioned Orgy if you were expecting a laugh riot. The movie has some moments, but it never takes off like I'd hoped it would. Why? I really can't put my finger on it. Movies like this are often either under-written or try to hard, but neither is really the case here. There are some chuckles throughout and the cast is likable, but in the end, it fails as a comedy. There was one truly laugh-out-loud moment -- which was hilarious -- but it wasn't enough to carry the movie. It seems odd to think that a movie called A Good Old Fashioned Orgy is mediocre, but that's the case.

Saturday Night Live has a history of having its cast members go on to star in movies. Jason Sudekis has made some interesting choices, as he seems to be determined to always be cast as the playboy or the douchebag. He obviously has comedy chops and he's typically likable, but he may want to branch out, as it's very easy to imagine that he's simply playing himself. It feels as if this kind of approach was taken to A Good Old Fashioned Orgy. The movie portrays a group of friends who like to hang out, and the audience is meant to feel that we are a part of the gang. However, we came to be entertained, and the movie doesn't try hard enough in that department.

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy is most likely the best orgy movie ever made in North Carolina (as far as I know) on DVD courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film has been letterboxed at 1.78:1 and the transfer is enhanced for 16 x 9 TVs. The image is sharp and clear, showing no intrusive grain and no defects from the source material. The colors look good and the image is never overly dark or bright. The picture is a bit soft and does show some artifacting, but this probably stood out because I've been spoiled by Blu-ray Disc. The DVD carries a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track which provides clear dialogue and sound effects. As a comedy, we don't get a ton of dynamic effects. The musical cues sound very good, providing surround effects and some subwoofer effects. The stereo effects are well-done in some scenes, as they bring to light off-screen action.

The A Good Old Fashioned Orgy DVD contains a few special features. We begin with an AUDIO COMMENTARY with Writers/Directors Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck and Jason Sudekis. The DVD contains ten DELETED SCENES which run about 16 minutes. Oddly, these scenes are letterboxed at 2.35:1, which makes me wonder about how the movie is framed. There are some funny moments here, but some of these are simply extended versions of scenes from the movie. We get a 5-minute GAG REEL. "How to Film an Orgy" (8 minutes) takes us on-set to see the "Fred's Beds" scene being shot. The focus then shifts to the party which opens the film.
